Adopting an Older Dog

Not everyone adopts a puppy. Many people decide to choose an older dog. Are you afraid to select an older dog though thinking there will be something wrong with it? Don't be afraid there are numerous reasons that people choose to get rid of dogs. Sometimes they are unable to take care of the dog or tired of having one.

People often have to move to a place that does not allow dogs. So they have to find a new home for their beloved pet. Other times the owner may have passed on and there are no family members willing to have the dog.

There are several reasons to adopt an older dog too. It can already be house broke for one thing. So if you have a hectic schedule and still want a dog this might be the way for you to go. At least this way part of the training has been taken care of for you. Sure the older dog may still have an accident or two if they are upset of moving to a new home, but the dog will quickly calm down as they get used to a new routine.

Older have already gone through being socialized and can play well with others. They are often times great with children and do not mind be messed with. These dogs can be great for adults and the elderly too.

You can find these dogs through shelters and rescue agencies throughout the country. They are not all mutts either. There are many purebred dogs out there that need a family and a new home.

The older dogs can be easily trained believe it or not. They are calmer than a puppy for one thing. These dogs also understand listening to their master is important. They even know what the word signifies.

Older dogs don't try to run things the way younger dogs do. They are more laid back and willing to let the humans be in charge. The older ones are content to be part of the family and lay on their round dog beds.

Whichever senior-age dog you get train them gently with fancy dog collars & leashes, especially while you are getting to know each other. You will find that positive reinforcement technique works much better with any dog than harsh training methods. A stern tone of voice is sometimes all the correction a dog needs, there is no need for yelling. Also reward the dog with a treat of some sort when they have done something right. Remember even a good belly scratch is a reward to a dog no matter what their age is.

You can see the benefits of an older dog here. Maybe next time you adopt a dog you will look to the ones that have a few years on them. They can be just as much of a joy as a younger pup can be. Dogs need love not matter how old they are. In fact the older ones often times return your love tenfold. So check out the senior dogs next time around.

There is nothing like the feeling of adopting an older dog. There are many people out there who love puppies, but also those who just love all dogs (I know I do). It can be difficult, because you don't have as much time together. But it is a great thing to do.

Very informative one. Some people might prefer older dog to puppy. For them your article will be very useful. Thanks.
