Another of the fun exercise things that you can do with your dog is to take him along with you when you go cycling. This allows you to enjoy cycling and your dog can run along beside you for some good exercise too. However, there are many safety considerations if you choose this method of exercise. Take a look at these important safety tips before you go out there cycling with Fido.

Tip #1 - Watch Your Dog for Heat Exhaustion and Fatigue

If you are going cycling with Fido, make sure that you watch your dog closely for heat exhaustion and fatigue. You don't want this to happen to your dog. Some of the symptoms of these problems can include staggering, falling behind while you are cycling, a dripping mouth, panting that is fast and heavy, and a mouth that is dripping. You need to stop if these symptoms occur. Cool your dog down by putting some cool water on your dog and getting him out of the sun as soon as possible. If your dog stops responding, make sure you take him to the vet. However, it is best to know your dog well enough to know when he has gone far enough. You don't want your dog to deal with this problem.

Tip #2 - Check Out Your Dog's Paws

Each time you go out cycling with your dog, make sure that you check out your dog's paws when you get back. Look for any splinters or injuries that have occurred. If you notice that your dog starts to limp while you are out, stop and take a look at the paws. Dog boots can be a great idea or you can allow your dog to run along in the grass instead of right on the concrete.

Tip #3 - Watch Out for Traffic

In most cases, it is not a good idea to go cycling with your dog in areas that have a lot of traffic, especially if vehicles or loud noises happen to spook your dog. If your dog spooks, he could pull you over and he could run out into the road. Usually it is best to stay on areas that are more remote so you don't have to deal with a lot of traffic. Going out on nature bike trails is a great idea as well.

Tip #4 - Know Local Laws

Before you decide to go out cycling with Fido, make sure that you know the local laws. Some places may not allow you to go cycling on the sidewalks. Sometimes you may have to cycle on the edge of the road in the bike lane. If this is the case, you never want to take your dog out there on the road. This is a bad idea.

Tip #5 - Use a Good Harness

It's a good idea to use a good harness if you are going to take your dog cycling with you. The collar can be a problem because it can cause painful pressure on the neck of your dog, which could cause an injury. Instead, a harness will provide you with a safer option that will keep your dog safer while you are out their together.
