Help Animals: Do Your Part with the Humane Society
61The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), established in 1954, is among the nation's largest animal protection organization. In fact, they are backed by an estimated 10 million Americans, which means that roughly every one out of 30 people. And their mission statement is, "Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty."
Here are some other key points about the HSUS:
1) They want a humane, sustainable world for all - all people and all types of animals.
2) The group acts as a main channel against exploitation, neglect and cruelty to animals.
3) In their efforts to reduce animal cruelty and suffering, the HSUS:
- Creates social exchanges for animals
- Are advocates for sound public animal-, wildlife- and habitat-related policies and issues,
- Check out cruelty cases, working with law officials as able
- Inform and educate the general public with regards to animal-related topics in a variety of ways, including offering programs.
- Work joint ventures with businesses to help animals
4) The HSUS is a leader in disaster relief for animals
5) HSUS people offer shelter and care for untold numbers of animals throughout their numerous locations, wildlife centers and mobile units.
6) They also offer support, training, conferences, programs and membership magazines.
Among national and world animal cruelty issues the HSUS addresses are those involving cockfights, dogfights, horrendous puppy mills, inhumane hunting, slaughtering of American horses, clubbing of baby seals and other animals. The group has won many legal battles and continues to do so today.
What can you do to help?
Many people wonder if they can help, even though they may have limited funds and time to volunteer or donate. And the answer is, "Yes!" A sampling of other ways to help follows:
- 1) Get pet tags for your animals and encourage others to do so.
- 2) Keep grooming supplies on hand to help keep your animal in tip top shape.
- 3) Speak out against animal cruelty, neglect and inhumane treatment. Report activities to your local authorities. It takes only one person to save many, some times.
- 4) As time, funds and household items allow, do donate what you can to local area shelters, pet rescues and Humane Society Chapters. They could use old cleaning rags, blankets, cleaning supplies, pet items (non-expired food and treats, leashes, collars, bedding, grooming tools and other pet-related items.
