64
The Papillion is a small energetic bundle of fur that is highly appealing both in looks and actions. They are adorable maintaining their puppy like qualities and energy into adulthood. Also known as the butterfly dog because their ears resemble butterfly wings this dog can bring laughter and entertainment into any home lucky enough to choose this breed for a pet.
Physical description
This dog stands 8-11 inches high when full grown and weighs between 8-10 pounds. He is an extremely small and fine boned dog that is much tougher than his appearance would suggest. His head is slightly rounded between his large ears. The ears may either be drooped and rounded or stand erect. His muzzle is short, thin and tapers. His black ringed eyes are medium sized and he has a long high set tail.
The Papillion has a one layer coat that is long fine and silky and it is somewhat frilled at the chest area. The coat is white and any other color but liver. He is a small handsome dog and quite appealing in appearance.
Personality
The Papillion is a little dog with a gigantic personality. He is playful, lively, affectionate, and loves the outdoor. While he can be difficult to housebreak he is quite easy to train otherwise and can even easily be taught to do a variety of tricks and will soon be following you to his dog treat jar.
While it is natural for most owners to give in to small dogs this is something to be avoided with the Papillion as giving him the rule of the house will ensure that he develops small dog syndrome which can result in some severe behavior problems including nipping and biting. Teaching this dog what is expected of him will result in a happy, eager to please dog that is good with children and other pets as well.
Grooming
This dog needs daily brushing to keep his silky coat looking it's best and to get rid of all those loose hair as he sheds a fair amount. He also needs proper regular dental and nail care and regular visits to his vet.
The Papillion is a very healthy dog although genetically he may be susceptible to knee cap problems and sometimes his fontanel does not close properly.
Exercise
Although small this dog is highly energetic and will need to be exercised every day. Due to his intelligence and love of learning all sorts of new tricks this should be quite an easy and enjoyable task as he not only enjoys walks and hiking with his human companions but loves playing fetch, jumping through hoops, and other types of exercise. You may want to set up metal dog gates to keep them out of areas you don’t want any trouble.
Small compact and extremely friendly the Papillion is ready, willing and able to travel anywhere with you and is much at home in a tent as he is at home or in a motel. Providing he gets adequate mental and physical exercise he will be a wonderful, well behaved and entertaining companion. Though small this dog has the personality and charisma of a much bigger dog and can easily make a big impression on all those he meets.
