The Shih Poo
78
The Shih-poo is a hybrid breed of dog that is a result of crossing a Poodle with a Shih Tzu. The Shih-poo is one of many Poodle hybrids that have been bred in an attempt to combine the Poodles characteristics such as aptitude, and low-shedding hair, along with the desirable traits of another breed, in this case the Shih Tzu. Shih-poos are preferred over Shih Tzus by some owners because the nose of the dog is less pushed in, which reduces the numerous breathing problems which are experienced by Shih Tzus.
The appearance of the Shih-poo varies considerably, as with most mixed breeds. The reason for this is that it will take characteristics from both of its parents. However, the size is one of the consistent traits of the Shih-poo. They have a general weight of between 13lbs and 20 lbs. It has a long coat, although the texture can be straight, wavy, or curly and of any color. The general build of the Shih-poo is somewhere between that of its parents.
The parent breeds of the Shih-poo share a number of temperament traits, more so than appearance. It is therefore much simpler to generalize their personality. They are generally intelligent, friendly, alert, and devoted to their owners, but they can be shy around strangers and as with any small dog, they do need to be socialized, especially around young children.
This breed thrives on being the center of attention, which results in them doing badly in kennels because they require the company of their owner. The Shih-poo does tend to be extremely sociable with other dogs and they do very well in the company of other pets.
The Shih-poo is an extremely energetic breed of dog that loves to be by its owner's side, going for walks on fancy dog leashes, car rides, or running around outdoors. Depending on their individual personalities, they can be lap dogs or outdoor dogs.
Because the Shih-poo is highly intelligent and they are eager to please their owners, they are very trainable. They learn quickly and seem to enjoy showing off tricks. However, they can be rather vocal, and bark readily. This makes them great candidates for watch dogs. However, it is important to remember that their barking can become excessive if they do not receive the correct training.
If not carefully supervised, the Shih-poo can become overweight. It is important to feed them only at mealtimes and not leave food in their bowls at all times.
Shih-poos have a low tolerance to the cold and the heat and should wear small dog coats in the winter. It is imperative that they are not left alone in the car in the summer, even with the window open, as they can suffer from heat exhaustion, which can result in death. When it comes to walk time, it is always advised to place a doggy coat on the Shih-poo if it is raining or snowing.
The Shih-poo's ears should be checked on a regular basis for odors and parasites. This is necessary because the Shih-poo has long, floppy ears that can be susceptible to extra temperature inside the ear, which can result in breeding bacteria and mites.
The coat of the Shih-poo should be combed or brushed every other day in order to keep it in beautiful condition and tangle free. It is also of great importance to brush this breed's teeth on a regular basis. This should be done from an early age in order to prevent veterinary dental treatment when the dog becomes older. As well as this, ensure that the claws are clipped at least once a month.
