Oh, no! Another snake?

Make some new friends!

Many people know about the various volunteer opportunities there are with canines. But what a lot of people don't know is that there are ample opportunities with other animals as well like cats - both feral and domestic, rabbits and other fun friends like snakes, lizards, large spiders (tarantulas), and more. And many of these opportunities are available through local rescue organizations and Humans Society chapters.

Here is a little more info about these programs:

1) Many organizations not only rescue animals, they help wild ones. For example, feral cats, those generally abandoned or strays turned towards the wild side, help society by keeping small rodents, insects, etc. at bay. To help them, volunteers often set up small homes or sheltered areas for them in wooded areas, handle the cats in a safe manner learned through training, and then bring them in to be spayed or neutered and get shots / vaccines, etc., then return them to their outdoor areas.

2) Rabbits, while often in need for the Easter season, are often in abundance and in need of homes, indoors similar to cats, and not caged up. And forget about outside hutches - not an option! These furry friends need some TLC and a safe environment with people trained about caring for them. Yes, their teeth can get sharp, so you'll need to learn about chew toys and the right foods they need. But other than that, they're much lower in maintenance, not needing rabies shots, worming treatments and all that like cats and dogs.

3) Speaking (or writing) of dogs, that brings us to opportunities outside the average Human Society visiting and walking programs. There are prison programs where inmates in minimum security prisons who are on their best behaviors and are on the end of the sentences who take care of the dogs until they are adopted. This activity provides one-on-one care and love for dogs in need plus the same for inmates getting ready for re-entry into society in need of relearning about friendship, responsibility, trust and love. Many of these programs need volunteers to help with transportation, training, and other program activities. Other animals in these types of prison programs include birds and rabbits.

4) Many other friends pop up in need of assistance like abandoned pet snakes, spiders, turtles and more. They may need new homes, temporary fostering while their families are away or help during transition. Volunteers would need to learn how to safely handle those in need and help with cleaning cages, feeding, transportation and other program activities.

To begin finding opportunities in your area, search the internet for the nearest Humane Society chapter and pet rescue organizations. Oh, and hey, don't forget to get your supplies together that you need like pet stain removal products for those little mishaps and travel-related items like dog travel accessories.

And here's to your success with your new friends!
