Training is an important part of socializing your dog to interact with you, family members, strangers and other pets. A well trained dog makes a wonderful addition to any household. Dogs that are properly trained are easier to love and interact with.

It is important to understand that there are various types of training. Behavior, obedience, and activity are all forms of dog training. Behavior training teaches your dog how to behave around other people and dogs. It also teaches your dog how to behave in your house as well as when walking on a leash.

Obedience training is often confused with behavior training. Obedience training helps to teach your dog how to carry out certain exercises. An example of an exercise is heeling. Obedience training will help your dog execute certain tasks when commanded by their owner. Although obedience training is beneficial to your dog it may still exhibit problems with their behavior.

Activity training teaches your dog certain actions that are intended to exhibit their abilities. Such activities can include catching, hunting, herding, etc. Activity training is not intended to teach dogs behavior skills.

Now that you understand the different methods of training your dog you can make an informed decision as to what will be best for your dog. Most dogs are in need of behavior training more than obedience training or activity training. Dogs are by nature pack animals and within this pack there is a hierarchy. You must act as the leader of the pack or your dog will not respect your commands and will act as they choose.

Behavior training teaches you and your dog how to interact in a manner that your dog will understand. Behavior training is especially important in helping your dog properly interact with other people and dogs. Dogs that exhibit poor behavior are often aggressive towards people and dogs that are unfamiliar. They may jump, bark, or even try and snap or bite.

Going for a walk with your dog can be an experience that creates stress for you and your dog. Dogs that are not dog leash trained often want to lead in a strong manner. Behavior such as this results in your need to pull, tug, or even yell at your dog. Leash training properly teaches your dog how to walk and behave while on a leash.

Once your dog successfully completes behavior training then you can move on to obedience training. Behavior training combined with obedience training makes for a better dog. Obedience training can be a great way to have fun with your dog by teaching it activities that will improve every aspect of your pet including receiving dog treats.

It is important to note that dogs are very much like children. They need to be taught how to act and behave appropriately. Unfortunately, dogs cannot talk and when they are stressed they will exhibit this through their actions. Training gives you and your dog tools to communicate with each other effectively.

Your dog will be happier and more loving through proper training. Remember to be patient with your dog and never implore the use of yelling or hitting when training your dog. Train your dog through love and the use of proper techniques. Your dog will reward you for your care and diligence.
