Teaching Your Dog the Basic Command Of “Come Here”

In the world of dog commands the most simple and universal (after “sit”), is obviously “come here”. If training is not done properly even simple commands can get complicated and take far longer than necessary. The following is the easiest way to teach this easy command.

These instructions will have your dog responding to "come" in no time at all. The technique involves luring your dog and then rewarding him. Dogs will almost always be motivated by food, but remember that this will be easier if your dog is hungry and remember to have handy dog treats on hand training aid.

The first step involves standing in front of your dog and holding a treat in your hand so that your dog can easily see what you have. Keep your arm resting on your leg in front of you.

Next step – get your dog excited. Get the atmosphere up for your dog by putting on a big smile and with an upbeat tone of voice, say "Come!” Try not to overdo the come command with too much excitement, but with just enough to get him to notice that you are happy.

As this point your dog should start running towards you, (or at least run at the sight of the dog treat in your hand). Most dogs come running at the first hint of food, but from time to time your dog will need a little more motivation. If your dog does not respond, next you should squat down and reach out with the treat just slightly and calling for your dog again.

At the point when the dog arrives in front of you, lure him into the sitting position by stroking his neck and upper back with one hand and applying pressure on his hindquarters. At the same time move the treat to his mouth with your other hand. Also begin to praising him thereby creating a positive feeling that he’ll want to experience again whenever you call his name.

Finally, you should repeat the sequence but discontinue using the treats and repeat the above steps, but substitute hearty praise in place of food when your dog comes to you.

It can end up taking a lot of work sometimes, but taking the time to teach your dog commands like come, sit, and lay down really are essential. I hardly ever use treats now, for training that is, although I still make her work for the treat, but using treats to begin with is definitely a great way to start out...
